Illuminated Birth was born of the belief that our birth stories matter and that we are stronger when we have knowledge and support.
I’m Megan Peasley, a certified doula, birth photographer, and childbirth educator based in Acton, Massachusetts, serving the Greater Boston area. I prepare and empower you for birth and beyond, by providing emotional, physical, and educational support during your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Some fun facts about me…
“So I was listening to a podcast…” is how I start many conversations.
I avoid the spotlight, but I will speak on a stage in front of millions if it means teaching about something I care about.
I am secretly a sucker for a slow-burn romance story (like Sydney Bristow and Michael Vaughn on ALIAS).
I became a scientist because I have a stubborn need to make things better; I became a doula for the same reason.
My favorite part about motherhood is rediscovering the world through their eyes, one treasured acorn or rock at a time.
I hate to cook, but I love good food. Luckily for me, my husband is a brilliant amateur chef!
My favorite story of all-time is Sailor Moon (especially the original manga).
I was born in Okinawa, Japan and learned Japanese in college. Studying abroad there was one of my favorite things I’ve ever done!
Chances are, if we work together, I will end up being your friend, not just your doula.
How did I start down the road to becoming a doula and birth photographer? I’ve been an enthusiastic “birth nerd” ever since I gave birth to my son in 2014 and care deeply about helping you understand your options in birth so that you feel strong and courageous in your birth experiences.
Outside of my work as a doula, I was a scientist with a masters of science in Biology from UC San Diego for over 11 years. Because of my experience as a biologist, evidence and education is a cornerstone of my support. At the same time, although birth is biology, it’s also one of the most deeply personal and human experiences of our lives. As a birth doula with a research background, I’m here to help you illuminate that line from the data to the divine (yes, I just rhymed).
On a more personal note, I have type 1 diabetes, so I am particularly interested in helping women and birthing people with pre-existing diabetes, gestational diabetes, disabilities, and other high-risk pregnancy conditions. High-risk pregnancy doesn’t mean you have to give up your power to your care team! You always have choices. I’m here to help you learn your options, amplify your voice, and believe in your strength.
As a trauma-informed birth doula, I serve all pregnant and birthing people, from all backgrounds, and believe empowered birth is a form of social justice. As the person giving birth, you’re bringing the power. I’m just here to shed a little light and help you ignite your own internal glow.
Hope to talk with you soon!
With love and respect,
Megan
